From July 1980 through the end of 2004 Bachelder & Bachelder was a joint independent practice of psychology (Bruce L. Bachelder, PhD) and education (Judith B. Bachelder, MA) with an emphasis on a combined psychological and educational approach to school learning problems and drug-free treatment of "attention" problems.

During the last 10 years of our practice, "managed care" was taking over the health care industry. The more we learned about it through reading and through early personal experience, the more decided we became that it was not for us. As it moved into Burke County we declined all requests to join panels of providers. Inevitably, fewer and fewer people could work with us until we finally closed our practices to new clients in January 2004.

During the years before closing I began to develop new kinds of work. I consulted with agencies helping management deal effectively with morale problems and difficult employees. I also began work again on a project I started some years ago (Bachelder, 1978), the development of SAAS-123, an alternative to the IQ test, to evaluate individuals who are unable to take a standard IQ test. I began offering specialized evaluation services. I also increased the amount of time spent developing span theory, the scientific foundation for SAAS-123.

We are still working out the details of our new life. We will travel extensively in our motor home and I will continue to write with an eye to publishing in professional journals and speaking before professional groups and parent groups. Development of span theory is a high priority. Not only is it the scientific basis for SAAS-123, it is also my answer to the spans question, one of the oldest questions in scientific psychology. I will also write and speak about a) the practical challenges to be faced when a scientist challenges conventional wisdom; b) school learning problems; c) problems in the way "attention problems" are diagnosed d) drug-free treatment of "attention problems"; and e) applications of "multiple-selves" theory in clinical practice.
